Crating Adult Dogs
Crating adult dogs can be a useful practice to safely manage behavioural issues and to confine dogs after injury or surgery. Dogs often seem to cope better with the concept of crating than their owners. Crates provide a hide-away where dogs can relax and feel secure. Crates aid in house training (see the puppy page), prevent destructive behaviour and calm anxious dogs. Crates are also useful for travel and for introducing a new pet or baby to the home. The crate should be introduced slowly and positively, when possible. The crate should be large enough for your dog to enter, turn around and lie down comfortably. A dog bed or mattress should fill the bottom of the crate. Provide toys and chews to keep your dog occupied.
